Dylan defense
November 9, 1990
Generally I try to avoid reading the Star because I know it’s bad for my disposition, but I occasionally find myself reading the editorial page where I am subjected to the rantings of individuals who have all the maturity of grapefruits.
Take for example Dan Chamber’s letter about bringing Bob Dylan to NIU. Chambers pictured Dylan as an old man stumbling on stage to sing “Like a Rolling Stone” for the thousandth time.
My research finds Dylan will be 50 next May, hardly qualifying him for doddering old man status.
If Mr. Chambers makes it to age 49 I don’t think he will think of himself as reaching decrepit old age.
Bob Dylan is one of the greatest songwriters of his own or any other generation but Mr. Chambers wouldn’t know that since he seems to get most of his musical knowledge from listening to the radio.
Try listening to Dylan’s work before judging it and if you don’t like it don’t make his age the basis of your judgment.
