Greeks innocent
November 26, 1990
We, Alpha Psi Lambda co-ed fraternity members, call to attention The Northern Star’s insensitive reporting of “Douglas Guard Battered” in the Nov. 13 issue.
The Star states police say it was an incident “caused by non-students attending NIU black greek dances.”
We are aware there are problems with non-students, but to blame black greek dances is ludicrous. Why even bring this up when the article should be dealing with the facts of the incident.
How is it possible for a black greek party to be responsible for this weekend’s occurence if the only dance connected with B.G.C. at the student center is ours.
We may be associate members of Black Greek Council but we still are a Latino co-ed fraternity and not a black greek-letter organization.
Even if we were, why should black greeks be responsible for something that happened in Douglas Hall when dances are usually held in the Holmes Student Center?
People—no matter who they are, when they come, or where they are from—visit NIU.
Greeks have no control over what they do. Accountability lies with those that are hosts and not with the sponsors of these events.
Capt. Webster is quoted as saying, “Any group that would host events this large would cause a problem.”
Do you mean there has never been and never will be a dance without problems concerning the University Police?
Funny—not one of our dances has seen this, or maybe you are referring to other problems we are unaware of. If there are, please inform the sponsoring organization; if not, do not blame the black greeks or any other organization for something they are not responsible for.
