Stage stumbler
November 12, 1990
Dan Chamber’s contention that Dylan is one of “students’ parents’ old rock heroes” is in my opinion incorrect; however, his point that performers such as Dylan are worthy of replacement on the university concert circuit by “fresher” performers is unfortunately a correct one.
I have been a Bob Dylan fan ever since I first heard the ubiquitous Dylan’s Greatest Hits: Volume 1 in 1977 at age 15.
Since then I’ve come to appreciate the magnitude of his lyrical and musical abilities. In short I have never become tired of his good, intelligent music or that of any other “older” musician.
On Tuesday night, however, Dylan did stumble onto and around the stage like “a tired old man” to render a poor and uninspired performance.
Despite the capable assistance of a tight backup band, Dylan’s performance amounted to a 75-minute cacophony of disjoined, droned lyrics, very sloppy acoustic guitar and harmonica-playing like that of a hyper-ventilating, tone-deaf three-year-old.
I went expecting to experience some of the feelings I get while listening to his recorded music.
I left with sore ears, a sense of disillusion and a sincere wish that I’d spent the cost of a couple of tickets on a couple new albums instead.
