Faculty appreciation

NIU’s Senior Honors Society, Mortar Board, will hold a faculty appreciation reception Nov. 28 for invited guests.
The reception will be held in the Holmes Student Center’s Capital Room South and refreshments will be served.

Philosophy lecture
Lorena Garcia, assistant professor of philosophy, will present a lecture titled “Descartes: Can Extension be Imagined?” Nov. 28 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Holmes Student Center Room 506.
The lecture is sponsored by the department of philosophy.
SOS support group
Significant Others in Support (SOS) is a newly-formed support group for the spouses, children over 18 and primary others of victims of childhood sexual abuse.
It is sponsored by Safe Harbor, a support group in the Fox Valley area for adults.
The next SOS meeting will be Nov. 28 at 7 p.m. at the Fox Valley Christian Church, 1605 W. Wilson in Batavia. The SOS meeting will precede the Safe Harbor meeting which will begin at 7:30 p.m.
A panel will discuss “Taking Care of Yourself During the Holidays” and will last until 9 p.m.

Austrian adventure
The Alumni Association is offering an “Austrian Adventure” planned for March 8 to 17.
The trip’s cost is $970 for active alumni members or $995 for non-members and friends. The cost includes air fare, lodging and some meals.

Annual holiday ball
The Ben Gordon Foundation will host its third annual Holiday Ball Dec. 1 at 6 p.m. at the Carls Fargo Restaurant on State and California streets in Sycamore.
Tickets for the Holiday Ball, which is black tie optional, are $50 per person and are available through Ben Gordon Center Foundation members. Proceeds from the event will go to support the center’s drug and alcohol abuse program and a housing program for the long-term mentally ill in DeKalb County.
unting season
The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department is reminding all hunters the next deer season is Dec. 7 to 9.
The department urges hunters obey conservation laws and hunting safety rules. It is emphasized that it is illegal to hunt on an individual’s land without permission and to hunt along railroad right of ways.
Fellowship convention
“Urbana 90,” an Intervarsity Christian Fellowship student mission convention, will be held at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Dec. 27 to 31.
Isaac Canales, pastor of the Mision Eben-Ezer Family Church in Carson, Cal., will lecture at the convention. Canales has ministered in the Los Angeles inner city and has helped to convert 15 street gang members.
