After becoming the first NIU women’s basketball player in nearly five years to record a points/assists double-double, senior guard Maria Serracanta has been named the Northern Star’s Huskie of the Week.
In the Huskies’ 70-61 victory over Eastern Michigan University on Saturday, Serracanta went 5-for-5 from the field for a 12 points, in addition to a career-high 11 assists.
Serracanta currently leads the Mid-American Conference in assists to turnover ratio with a 1.93, which also puts her in the top-50 in the nation, while also leading NIU with 104 assists.
This is the first Huskie of the Week for Serracanta and the first of the season for women’s basketball.
The next Huskie of the Week will be announced March 16.
The Northern Star sports section’s Huskie of the Week is voted for on a weekly basis. Student-athletes considered for this week’s edition were selected based on their performance in competitions taking place from Feb. 23 to March 1.
