Solutions lost in quarrels
November 27, 1990
Hey folks, we need to get this security in the residence halls straightened out.
After a couple of reported incidents during the past two weeks and the backlash that is continuing to follow them, nobody at NIU is any closer to finding a solution to the problems.
As a matter of fact, nobody at NIU seemingly can even pinpoint the problems.
But one thing is for sure, until people stop getting all bent out of shape at those who fish for underlying causes to the problem, nothing is going to get solved.
It is evident there is a problem. It is also evident the people hanging out in the lobbies—the lobby gang, as they are affectionately called—aren’t too happy about being fingered as hoods. And it is evident all of the bickering is clouding the issue and pushing back any type of solution.
Students would be better off trying to help NIU administrators solve the problem than by taking the defensive on anything someone says.
If an administrator sees the situation different than a student—and they do—then the student should talk with the administrator. Don’t expect to change his mind, but your insight is not only enlightening but useful.
On the same hand, the administration needs to be a little more discriminate on what it says.
It is only together we can solve the problem. And together means working toward the common goal while understanding that there will be disagreements along the way.
Continuing to fight about the petty ailments will not cure the disease.
