Developers wary of council’s split vote

Houses might not be going up on Gurler Road, despite the DeKalb city council’s tentative approval to consider rezoning the land, said a DeKalb real estate broker.

Steve Milner, of Century 21, Milner and Associates, said the city council’s split vote worried B & B Enterprises, which is proposing a housing project adjacent to the Contel and 3M properties in south DeKalb.

The developers need five out of seven council votes to get the land rezoned over objections by the adjacent landowners.

The council voted 3-3 last week when considering the possibility of rezoning the proposed residential site from its current Office, Research and Industrial status.

Mayor Greg Sparrow cast the deciding vote favoring the rezoning consideration.

“B & B is probably going to elect not to go along with the property development,” Milner said.

At last Tuesday’s city council meeting, Milner said Contel probably would prefer the proposed residential site remain vacant. However, Milner said he favored B & B’s housing plan because it filled a market gap in DeKalb.

Milner said despite a recession in office building, Contel is still enthusiastic about building in DeKalb.
