Petition useless

This letter is in response to the petition drive orchestrated by Sandra Overmeyer, which she states is, “To let the state legislature know how students feel.”

I do believe that they know, but do not care. Politicians listen to the voices of students when students vote, but to date it will not happen.

I know, I have been a deputy registrar in DeKalb County for a year and have gone door to door trying to register people to vote; they don’t care.

Many said, “What for?” so I told them because if students vote in a block we could possibly affect tuition costs: they still don’t care.

Then I would tell them the price of beer was going up and if they vote they have a chance to affect the tax. This persuaded most people to register, which is barely an accomplishment considering most won’t vote.

So basically when it came down to it, the students at this institution and others are too damn lazy and have an “I don’t care” or “I can’t affect the political system anyway” attitude.

That’s probably why there is a 56% dropout rate at this school, and local taverns are good investments.

So in the meantime Ms. Overmeyer spends some time getting students registered to vote first and mobilizing them afterwards.

What is really great about this petition is that it comes now on Oct. 4, and the deadline to register to vote is Tuesday Oct. 9.

I guess the point of my letter is that students don’t care, and we would rather have the comics on the front page of The Northern Star than the same old rhetoric about another useless tuition petition.

And also Ms. Overmeyer, you seem to be such a martyr and left North Central College in Naperville because of rising education cost; by the way, did tuition go down when you left?
