NIU ends season action winning two out of three

Even though the final record is only 6-12-0, the NIU field hockey squad can look back on this campaign and use it as a positive incentive for 1991.

The Huskies closed out the year winning two of their last three, and most impressive, their final weekend split came against a pair of Top-20 programs. After winning its home finale on Oct. 25 by a 6-0 count against Michigan State University, NIU lost a hard-fought 2-1 decision Saturday to No. 9-ranked University of Iowa before closing the year with a 1-0 upset of No. 20 University of Iowa before closing the year with a 1-0 upset of No. 20 University of Michigan.

In addition to finishing at 6-12-0, the Huskies posted a 4-6-0 ledger in the Midwest Collegiate Field Hockey Conference.

NIU pulled off the upset of Michigan with just 1:21 remaining in the match. Debbie Beans had the assist pass on Kristen Felter’s two-yard strike from the right wing. Jenny Van Delft was rewarded with her fourth shutout of the year.

Against Iowa, the Huskies battled the Hawkeyes to a 0-0 halftime draw only to have Iowa score 11:50 into the second half. The Huskies cut that margin in half as Amy Lynn set up Maaike Schroeder for a goal on a penalty corner. NIU was unable to produce an equalizer in the final nine minutes.
