Greeks interested in environment, try recycling program

Recycling fever is here and Greek Row is catching it.

Sororities and fraternities are showing an interest in donating their garbage for the environment after past “indifference” toward recycling, said Dave Broustis, Student Association recycling adviser.

Broustis said a spurt of contacts from greeks over the last few weeks has exemplified the heightened concern by the general public of where our garbage goes.

Most greek houses said they recycle, especially aluminum cans.

Broustis said he was particularly impressed by Delta Zeta’s unique effort to recycle paper and plastics. “They have a good attitude,” he said.

The student recycling center is picking up the materials collected by Delta Zeta and a couple other houses, he said.

Jon Franz, house “dad” for Delta Zeta, organized the recycling program and hopes the effort will lead to a coordinated greekwide effort.

“We have thought about contacting all the (greek) presidents,” Franz said. He said he would be willing to head a recycling program if Greek Row decided to participate in a coordinated effort.

However, the sorority started the program just last week and is still testing the program, said Stacy Bonrud, Delta Zeta vice president.

The response so far has been encouraging, Bonrud said. “It’s really easy. We don’t have to do very much,” she said.

Coordinated recycling by all Greeks has not been considered by the Interfraternity Council, said President Rob Martin. He said he is aware that many houses recycle, but no one has proposed an all-greek recycling program.

But Martin said the council’s ears are open. “We are always looking at new issues,” he said.

Broustis said fraternities have an especially high potential for collecting aluminum cans because of their parties. He suggested a program where recycling containers would be present at all parties in the future.
