Alcohol-free tent hosted

NIU students and parents alike will be asked to have fun safely this weekend at one tent in the tailgate section outside the last home football game.

“Think when you drink” is the theme of the non-alcoholic beer tent sponsored by Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity on Parents’ Day Weekend.

“We want to promote alcohol awareness in college students,” said Don Horne, chair of new member education for the fraternity.

Members will pass out literature on blood-alcohol levels, safe partying and drunk driving. They will also provide free samples of Anheuser Busch’s alcohol-free O’Doul’s beer, he said.

NIU’s Health Enhancement Services and Anheuser Busch provided the literature, he said.

“We’re hoping that with it being parents’ weekend a lot of people will come and think about these issues,” he said.

Phi Kappa Sigma is currently on indefinite suspension for contest violations in a Greek Sing skit in March, said Adviser for Greek Activities Dawn Sturma.

The fraternity is working with a review team in doing programming and educational activities, Sturma said. “They are working very hard to improve their image,” she said.

A football game is a good time to contribute to alcohol awareness week and show that the greek system is not just for drinking, Sturma said.

“We’re doing this all on our own,” Horne said. “We felt this tent should have been done anyway,” he said.

Phi Sigma Kappa provided the athletic department with security, ticket counts and parking services this year, said Mary Mihelich, the Assistant Athletic Director.
