Pet tips over water glass triggering apartment fire
October 21, 1990
Nobody was injured when a cat triggered an apartment fire Saturday.
The DeKalb Fire Department responded to a fire at University Village Apartments, 630 Annie Glidden Road at 8:43 a.m., and had it under control in about 15 minutes. The fire started in apartment 104 on the second floor of the three level building.
Apartment resident Stephanie Jennings, 23, told fire department officials the fire started from an ironing accident with her cat.
Jennings was ironing clothes when her cat knocked a glass of water and it spilled directly into an electrical outlet in the wall, she told officials. The water apparently caused a spark that ignited a pile of clothes on the floor, she said.
Assistant Fire Chief Joseph Jones said the fire did not spread beyond the apartment, but there is smoke damage in the apartment directly above and in adjacent hallways. The damage is estimated at $15,000.
Jones said the department initially responded to the fire with two engines, one ambulance and one command vehicle. But police officers on the scene reported smoke coming from the building’s awnings so two more engines were called.
