Keep ceremony

I am writing in response to Bruce Kremer’s suggestion to remove the benediction and invocation from graduation ceremonies at NIU.

Not only do I believe this action would be a regressive move by an institution that fancies itself as progressive, but, as a taxpayer, it is a violation of my rights and the rights of all students to take this action without the approval of the student body.

Concerning the possibility of conflict in presenting religious practices in a public institution, let us not ignore the fact that this country was established in order that its people could worship God freely. (Read any historical document concerning the issue).

To this day the U.S. Congress opens each session with a prayer to God. As a country, three of every four citizens believe in God.

I am thankful to God for giving me the opportunity to attend college and receive a degree. Many people are not as fortunate.

Therefore, I think it is fitting to take time to honor God on a day set aside to honor students He enabled to go to college.
