Red tape at NIU
October 8, 1990
I would just like to comment on the bureaucracy a student must put up with on this campus.
On Monday, Sept. 24, there was an advertisement in The Northern Star stating requests for permits for the business department courses were due by Oct. 5.
Since I was trying to graduate with a business minor, I went into the business office to get a request form.
According to the form, in order to receive two business courses (which I needed to graduate on time) I would need to attach a copy of my graduation progress report to the form.
The people over at the business office told me I should have received a progress report in the mail since I am a senior. Oddly enough though, the only letters I had received from this university were bills.
After making several phone calls, I finally found out from the evaluation office that it would take four weeks to obtain a graduation progress report.
Since I only had two weeks to turn in my permit request form, it seemed as if I was in a bind.
I called over to the business office once again, only to find out there were advisers in the office, but they could not talk to me on the phone.
If I wanted some questions answered, I would have to go into the office. After a lot of yelling, I was told an adviser would call me back.
When my call was returned by an academic adviser, I spoke with her for five minutes and then was told “You have taken up enough of my time…I have to go.”
I thought advisers were supposed to help the students. Unfortunately, I am wrong, and the problem had to be resolved a different way. I am no longer striving to obtain a business minor.
