Tax won’t help
October 17, 1990
After reading the editorial entitled “Students get aid from tax,” I must express my dismay at the ignorance behind the arguments presented.
True, there is a number of people entering their golden age. It’s also true that we have a growing national debt.
However, social security has a surplus that will more than cover these new retirees. And contrary to what you may believe, social security payments do not offset the national debt.
The payments are by law separate from the federal budget; however, they are used through fancy accounting to hide the true extent of the national deficit.
In the future, please do not advocate unless tax increases. Studies have shown for every tax increase there is an increase of more than 150% (I forgot the exact figure) of the amount of the increase in expenditures made to keep taxpayers tolerant of increases.
Instead, you may want to focus on useless bureaucracies and the lack of a line item veto for the president of the United States.
