Jackson out of own arena
September 4, 1990
Once again Rev. Jesse Jackson managed to jump into the international political limelight, where he does not belong.
Jackson’s latest escapade came about after he arrived in Great Britain to welcome home British citizens held hostage in Iraq, and recently released from Saddam Hussein’s grasp.
But it wasn’t enough that Jackson convey his good wishes to the former hostages. He felt it necessary to make himself the center of attention by carrying 5-year-old hostage Stuart Lockwood from the plane while smiling brightly for a few pictures along the way.
Perhaps Jackson wanted to make sure the boy found his parents safely, or perhaps Jackson just found another way to get his picture taken and his name in print.
British newspapers seem to have the situation well-assessed. While most agreed Jackson’s actions were manipulation of one sort or another, The Daily Express hit the nail on the head.
“The volatile Mr. Jackson, who still seems to bd searching for a role, made a blatant publicity point. He did not think to consider that Stuart and the other hostages had been released physically from Iraq, but were still held captive mentally,” the Express stated.
Jackson should find an appropriate position, whether it be in the political arena or as a talk show host, but not as a major player in international crisis situations.
