Not a big issue

I don’t understand why this whole ROTC thing is such a big issue. The fact is that the Reserve Officer Training Corps discriminates against other human beings, and has no place on our campus. Period.

Some people argue that banning the ROTC is not fair to the students in the ROTC whose views do not necessarily parallel those of the military.

What we have to remember is that nobody forced these individuals to be in the program. They entered knowing full well that they were joining an organization that discriminates.

As for the people who are in the program for the financial support of an education, well it’s pretty sad that you have to resort to degrading other human beings to obtain your goals.

And as for the people who think that homosexualty is morally unacceptable, you have to realize that morals are a person’s feelings and attitudes on a subject.

You must also accept the fact that not everyone’s feelings and attitudes are going to be the same as yours. And you have no right to try and force them to see and do things your way.

Oh, and that also goes for those of you who try and bring God and the Bible into the picture. Did it ever occur to you that some people do not worship the same god as you?

Once again, as with morals, religion is a personal thing and differs from person to person, and who are we to say which belief is right, and which one is wrong? To quote the Bible may mean nothing to some people.

NIU has given ROTC two years to change the policy, which is more than generous. This gives people already in the program a chance to either find some other means of financial support, or transfer to another school that doesn’t care about their students.
