Beat the odds
September 9, 1990
Do not allow it to happen to you. As a minority student that has been here for several years, I have delegated it my responsiblility to advise you with a motivational objective in mind.
The college experience is a wonderful one that is often times short-lived for a mulitiplicity of minority students. With the new-found freedom there is a tendency for some students to overlook academic responsibility.
It disturbs me to see so many of us fall by the waist-size. Statistically, we have been suffering from the law of diminishing return. We must gear ourselves toward statistical reversal.
There are many minorities that never get the chance to experience post-secondary education. We must establish ourselves at the university level, enabling us to reach back into our respective communities and initiating a more positive trend.
Let us defeat the odds that we are faced with. Let us become active participants at NIU politically, academically and socially.
Let us become a visibly dynamic minority force. Most importantly, let us make the attainment of a degree our number one priority. Welcome to all students. See you at graduation.
