ROTC harmed
September 20, 1990
I am writing in support of the NIU ROTC program. There have been many letters written to the editor within this past year about how terrible it is tha ROTC denies homosexuals their rights. I would like to point out that this is simply not the case.
The ROTC program does not discriminate. In fact, homosexuals are allowed to take every class that the department offers. It is actually the U.S. government that enforces the idea tha homosexuals should not be allowed in the military. Not the ROTC program.
The U.S. government enforces this law with good intent toward the homosexuals’ social and physical well-being. The U.S. Armed Forces would pose an unsafe environment for the homosexual.
Another issue to consider before passing judgement on the ROTC program is that there hasn’t been one single case of a homosexual being denied entrance into the NIU ROTC program. This is an important fact to remember.
The ROTC program has no quarrel with homosexuals. The gay activists claim that ROTC is trying to take away their rights, but as it has been revealed this is not the case.
In actuality, it is the homosexuals on this campus who are trying to take away the rights of those students wishing to take part in the ROTC program.
I am speaking from experience having served in the active Army for two years, a current member of the Army Reserves, and a second year member of the NIU ROTC program.
The ROTC program is helping to fund my education and will someday allow me to become an officer in the U.S. Army.
Kicking ROTC off campus isn’t going to accomplish anything for the homosexuals except to prove that they can take away the rights of others.
The military will still remain solid on the issue, and the only ones that will really be affected are the students who wish to participate in the ROTC.
It seems strange at a time when our country needs it’s military the most, the people who chant loudest for freedom are against trying to preserve it.
