UP&A calls out for faculty help
September 17, 1990
Whether people go greek during Rush, sign up for an athletic club, or share time with others in a religious fellowship, they are joining an NIU student organization.
Each student group campaigns year-round to recruit new students. This year, the call goes out again to the faculty as well as students.
All SA-recognized student organizations are required to have a full-time faculty member as an adviser. The office of University Programming and Activities is looking for faculty members who are interested in spending a little bit of time helping students learn outside the classroom.
Advisers themselves decide how much time they wish to spend on the group. Gung-ho advisers are likely to spend more time with their groups than others. Other groups are more self-sufficient and don’t need such an active adviser.
To insure that an adviser is not held back, or dragged along by the group, the UP&A reviews advisers and tries to create good matches.
Flecia Thomas, associate director of UP&A said UP&A’s function is not to find a group for an adviser, but rather it is “trying to match up advisers with students.” Advisers can spend from one to three hours a week helping the students, depending on how much they are needed or how much they want to do.
Faculty advisers have important roles because education does not stop at the end of class. They must be familiar with NIU policy and make sure that the student group follows the Student Judicial Code. They have to act as financial advisers and informants.
