SA fouled up basics, again
September 18, 1990
One day.
Or maybe more, if you count the time the candidates can campaign while the voting booths are open.
The Student Association elections have finally arrived and possibly for the first time in the SA’s history, election advertising is lower than student enthusiasm.
Two weeks ago SA executives decided to push back the election because nobody bothered to take out any petitions.
But few people knew about the petitions and the election because the SA didn’t let them know.
But the executives assured us not to worry. The added time will increase the quality and quantity of candidates.
But it hasn’t. The numbers game again assures write-in candidates will find their place on the senate. Not because of a grass-roots campaign, but because there aren’t enough official candidates.
Claims that the extra time helped to recruit brighter, more well-rounded candidates that will enhance students’ voices at the university, local and state levels are bunk.
The SA let the students down. Students were promised there would be change and yet the election process is gettng worse.
There is still time for the SA executives to fulfill their promises made last semester—and the willingness and capacity are there.
But continuing to foul-up the basics of government involvement is inexcusable.
