All facts needed

In response to the letter to the editor in the Sept. 12 edition of The Northern Star entitled “Victims of the Press,” we see no reason for the author’s distress concerning the treatment of the three Omega Psi Phi members and their NIU-sponsored roadtrip.

We believe that since such action inevitably affects all NIU students, we should know all of the facts concerning such illegal wrongdoings.

We do not believe that the article “Credit Abused by Fraternity” adds “insult to injury” as stated by Mr. Tatum’s letter to the editor.

NIU students should be well informed about all university actions (good or bad) since such actions affect the entire school population. Why should we hide or cover-up the fact that these men took advantage of a university policy set up for their own benefit?

We, who also believe in the educational system, do not see the validity of the author’s views that this is a racial attack that can only be controlled by means of educational tools.

Yes, education is a significant contributor to the reduction of prejudices and related attacks, but we do not believe that there was a racial attack made by The Northern Star.

Nowhere in the original article does it state the race or ethnicity of the accused. We were not aware of the African American heritage of these men until Mr. Tatum’s letter was published the day after the article appeared in The Northern Star.

We hope that the actions taken by the NIU judicial office, and any other legal proceedings resulting from this incident, inhibits others from attempting to swindle the University.
