Forty cents can turn into 50 bucks pretty easily.

Just ask some of the 30 people ticketed Thursday for evading tollbooths while heading into DeKalb.

Master Sergeant David Charnicky of the Illinois State Police said Thursday about 10 officers were detailed to the DeKalb exits at Peace and Annie Glidden roads to run routine checks on toll evasion and other violations.

Not paying the 40-cent toll is worth a $50 ticket, he said.

“Millions of dollars a year are lost in toll evasion,” Charnicky said.

The state police district headquarters and the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority are in Oakbrook.
