Classes have resumed at many universities and colleges across the country, and some are already dealing with serious issues of safety in their communities.
When selecting a college, parents and students often choose small communities and cities because of the security and quality of life. NIU has a fine campus safetey record, but as students you must always take ordinary safety precautions.
It is important that you remember to lock your doors and your possessions, and you are encouraged to use the bus service and the Late Night Ride Service to prevent walking alone, especially at late hours.
The University Police Department recommends that you take the following additional measures:
Stay alert, and keep your mind on your surroundings.
Stand tall and walk confidently.
Trust your instincts. If you feel uncomfortable in a place or situation, leave.
Choose well-lit and busy streets. Avoid passing vacant lots, alleys, construction sites, deserted streets and wooded areas. Take the long way if it is safest.
Report any broken windows or lights to maintenance and security staff.
In over half the reported rapes, women know their attackers. Be wary of bringing causal acquaintances to your room or apartment.
Take care of your keys. Don’t give anyone a chance to duplicate them.
Never hitchhike. Accept rides only from persons you trust.
Go with a friend, not alone, especially if you’re headed for a late night snack or study break.
Never prop exterior doors open.
Report suspicious strangers on your floor or in your apartment complex to the appropriate individuals.
Prevention has proven to be one of the best defenses against crime. We want the entire academic year to be a productive, safe and healthy time for you, so if you need more information about ways to ensure that it is, please contact the University Police at 753-1212 or the Division of Student Affairs at 753-1573. We are here to help.
