Hussein propaganda a ploy
August 29, 1990
The United States citizenry should not be fooled by the Middle East’s latest strong man. Saddam Hussein’s lame attempts to ease public sentiment after over-running Kuwait should be thrown away as pure bunk.
The propoganda transmitted via satalite throughout the world is insulting. So too are the repeated attempts by Hussein’s diplomatic officials to ensure the world community Iraq wants nothing but peace. His peace obviously is not one the world recognizes.
Hussein truly knows what it means to be between a rock and a hard place. He lied to his fellow Arabs about his intentions in Kuwait and then threw away precedence by invading the oil-rich neighbor. He couldn’t have expected the more than 35,000 American troops knocking on his door. The man might be crazy, but he isn’t dumb.
So the question becomes lose face or much, much more. However, the question is not easily answered. There remains the possibility the longer the stand-off continues the better chance Hussein has of rallying the Arab world against the imperialist Yankees. Hussein is trying to turn the mess into an Arab issue, thus explaining again why the U.S. should stay home.
Nevertheless, the U.S. is there to stay. His propoganda campaign is failing miserably because it is unbelievable. The U.S. must continue not to believe it until he leaves Kuwait.
