ROTC must stay
July 10, 1990
As a member of the class of 1969, I often wished I could support NIU with periodic contributions. The years I spent there are among the most memorable of my life.
A disturbing article, “ROTC, NIU Constitution Conflict,” in Northern Now, represents an example of why I cannot.
As a Christian, I acknowledge the existence of certain moral absolutes to which God holds everyone accountable. Homosexuality is not only a moral wrong, it undermines society’s foundational institution: the family.
Due to the nature and function of the military, I agree that it has additional logical reasons for not commissioning homosexuals.
We have developed such a phobia in this country over “discrimination” that we have reached the point where we fail to discriminate between right and wrong.
It is bad enough for NIU to have a policy calling for equal treatment without regard to “sexual orientation;” it is an utter disgrace that on the basis of such a policy, NIU would consider eliminating the ROTC program.
