Where’s the cash, fellas?

Today’s lesson: Don’t count your chickens before they’re hatched.

It’s truly a wonderful and equally amazing thing that much-needed asbestos removal will be done this summer at University Health Services. It’s always nice to have a health care facility that’s healthy itself.

But, asbestos removal is a big-time work order that puts a wrench in normal office activity, so all health center operations have commenced THE BIG MOVE.

Everybody and their respective everything is moving everywhere—some operations will move to second and third floors of the Holmes Student Center, others to Neptune East, and still others to Neptune West.

But, wait a minute. NIU hasn’t even put its money where its movement is yet. About $3.8 million is needed for the asbestos removal, and bill to which NIU’s request for funds from the state was attached has not been approved yet, and has in fact run into a snag.

The bill made it through all the right committees in the house and senate until abruptly the part of the bill where NIU asks for money was cut.

However, though the end of the current senate session is only 10 days away, the politicians are telling us not to worry because stuff like this always happens. They say NIU’s request will probably get back on the bill.

Maybe there’s no reason to panic, but a vacant asbestos-ridden health center and unpaid bills are not pretty visions.
