Lacrosse takes ‘Neck tourney

Thoughts of yesteryear remained on the minds of the NIU lacrosse club as it traveled to Macomb, Ill. to compete in the 1990 Midwest Spring Invitational Lacrosse Tournament this past weekend.

After losing to the Leathernecks in 1989, the Huskies turned the table on the ‘Necks this year and came away with a convincing 22-7 victory to capture the tournament’s top spot.

Poor ball control seemed to be WIU’s weakness, and coupled with NIU’s exceptional passing, leading to the fastbreak, sealed the ‘Necks doom. NIU’s Jim Marvin paced the Huskies offensively with nine goals against WIU. Graduating senior Chad Anderson managed to pump in a goal in his last appearance at the tournament.

Marvin was rewarded for his scoring with Top Offensive honors in the tourney. Huskie Paul Pratt secured Top Defensiveman accolades with his ability to strip the ball from opposing players and effectively clear the ball.

“We just passed the ball so well that the other teams weren’t able to keep up with us,” said team coach Marvin. “The midfielders would never give up on the ball and continually got fastbreaks started. Our goalie (Jim Seeley) was a wall. It was a great way to go out.”

The Huskies, 8-4, defeated Knox College in game one of the tourney followed by a 13-7 downing of Missouri.

The lacrosse club plays the NIU alumni on May 5 at the fields west of Stevenson Towers.
