Not sex objects

We, the Women’s Alliance, would like to respond to your editorial entitled “Look for a Different Route.”

Prior to your article was a cartoon portraying our members as cockroaches being exterminated by “Freedom of the Press” bugspray. Does the cartoonist realize that she/he has pitted freedom of the press against freedom of speech?

We have always believed that these two freedoms were equally important in the Constitution (they are both presented in the First Amendment).

Your editorial insisted that our protest against DeKalb Nite Weekly will provide “free publicity” and encourage readership. We feel we have successfully raised awareness about this publication and its promotion of sexism.

In the next couple of weeks, hopefully, people will decide for themselves whether or not it is sexist. Frank Trebusak might not be at fault for printing pictures of models, but he is at fault for portraying them as sexual objects. We ask Mr. Trebusak to take responsibility for his actions—to admit his “Co-ed of the Week” feature is sexist.

To be perfectly clear: The Women’s Alliance feels the DeKalb Nite Weekly is harmful to the status of women on NIU’s campus because it perpetuates stereotypical images of women as sex objects.

Our success in removing this publication from campus will be one victory in the war against the exploitation of women. We again urge people not to read it, but to recycle it.

Advertisers should be aware The Northern Star and Midweek are more accessible and less controversial papers which are freely distributed on campus. Finally, please help us to continue to raise public awareness of sexism in our community. Think globally, act locally.
