Cheap attempt
April 17, 1990
I am writing in regard to the Gay Lesbian Union’s so-called “Jeans Day,” which was recently observed throughout campus.
Being that this is my first year at NIU, it was my first chance to witness this annual spectacle taking place. Like so many other people, I was aware of the Jeans Day ahead of time.
However, I still put on my Levi’s. This is not because I’m a firm supporter of the GLU; frankly, I don’t care if they do or don’t exist. I wore my jeans because I felt like it, and NO group of gays, lesbians, or anyone else is going to tell me that my everyday attire ties me in with their organization.
I saw Jeans Day as a cheap attempt by the GLU to gain support and/or sympathy from the public. If they want their REAL supporters to stand up and be counted, they should consider instituting a day for armbands, pink triangles, etc. Jeans Day only shows how many supporters the GLU doesn’t have, and then some.
