Be assertive
April 12, 1990
It seems that Gay Awareness Week is upon us once again. As always, when the Gay Lesbian Union sponsors an event, a dumb question comes to mind: Why is GLU the only organization that cannot publish the location of their events on their flyers?
They can raise such a big stink about ROTC, an organization that probably none of them intend to get involved in, yet are too timid to tell people where they are congregating. Do you really think these charlatans really want to join the Army as commissioned officers? Being an officer or even an enlisted member of the Armed Forces takes no small amount of assertiveness—it’s not for timid people!
If the GLU members really knew how to assert themselves as opposed to manipulating other students at the cost of their ROTC scholarships, they might have some respectability.
Another thing, do the GLU/BRIC activists have some trouble with reading comprehension? Hasn’t it been said, time after time, that the ROTC program at NIU does not make policy? That ROTC gets its orders from Washington?
The fact that GLU consistently ignores this fact only proves that they seek only to further themselves. They will help no one else! They will not help the university in any way and certainly not anyone who desires to take the ROTC avenue to a secure future! Now if that isn’t discrimination, tell me what is! I think the leaders of NIU had better take a stand, and soon, before they make a laughing stock of this good school!
