Tennis team spanks foes during Parents’ Weekend

NIU women’s tennis coach Patty Groth told her squad concentration was key in the Huskies’ Parents’ Weekend matches. The squad took her words to heart, whipping University of Illinois-Chicago, 7-0, Friday, and Creighton University, 8-1, Saturday.

“I told the team that I realized it was hard to play teams even or weaker than yourself, but concentration on the match at hand would be the best strategy for success,” Groth explained.

Saturday’s rain forced action indoors at the Kishwaukee YMCA. Creighton posted its lone point at No.5 singles when Corinne McCarthy got by NIU’s Lisa Boedecker, 6-2, 6-3. The No.2 Huskie doubles team of Monica Larson and Kris Whitney was pushed to the limit before winning 7-6 (6-4), 7-5. No. 1 Hild Andersch took CU’s Valerie Grave in straight sets (6-0, 6-0) while Kathi Kennedy won the No. 6 singles match 6-0, 6-1 over Donna Glow.

Friday afternoon’s one-hour rain delay had no effect on NIU at the Gullikson Courts. UIC won only one game in the five complete singles flights when Julie Yaroch managed 6-0, 6-1 set scores against NIU No. 5 Lisa Boedecker. Hild Andersch, Monica Larson, Jami Cheek, and Kris Whitney each scored 6-0, 6-0 straight set victories. NIU posted default wins at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles. Doubles one and two were cancelled following a brief downpour.

Huskie women’s tennis closes its season Tuesday hosting Wheaton College, 3 p.m., on the NIU Gullikson Courts.
