Fees are unfair
April 9, 1990
I find it imperative to apprise my fellow commuting graduate students of the inequitable fees they are being assessed each semester.
Those students who commute to campus (20 miles or more) to attend classes are unfairly charged such inapplicable fees as the student bus activity, health service, and athletics.
Clearly, none of the stated fees are applicable to these students. Since the students are providing their own means of transportation, they would not require the use of the student buses.
Furthermore, the students do not partake in student activities because not only is the distance to the campus a hindrance, but the fact that most commuting students are not able to leave their places of employment or other responsibilities to attend the activities adds to this problem. Similarly, the health service fee and the athletic fees are inapplicable to the commuting students.
It’s more convenient and perhaps the only viable choice to students who attend evening classes to seek health care in their own localities. Moreover, few students are willing to drive 40 miles or more roundtrip, daily, to take part in any athletic events, let alone having the free-time necessary for such involvement.
Commuting students incur enough expenses via travelling to DeKalb to attend classes without having to pay fees for services which they cannot or would not receive.
To have these inapplicable fees waived, commuting students must register their complaints with the Board of Regents. Please send a short note or clip this letter, sign it, and send it to Dr. Tony Fusaro, Chairman, President’s Fee Study Committee, Provost’s Office, Lowden Hall, DeKalb, IL 60115.
