Soccer hoopla includes newly formed squad

The platform for tomorrow’s soccer game against the Chicago Blaze is set.

Willy Roy, head coach, and some of his helpers spent Thursday afternoon setting up a 10-foot high platform for SportsChannel cameras for Saturday’s 1 p.m. hoopla.

Roy said since the soccer team has “no money” he and his team have to do the nessary work. The preparations and the promotions are finished for tomorrow’s historical game. It is the first game ever in Blaze franchise history. And now the question is—who is going to win?

“We definitely want to win,” Roy said. “I think it’s going to be a good game and it’s great for our guys to get this much coverage, because it’s going to be such a great event.”

Although the Chicago Blaze will be looking to establish a winning attitude from the start, Roy said the Huskies are not going to roll over for them even though they have nothing to gain.

“Our attitude better be excellent,” said Roy. “It doesn’t matter if you’re playing a grade school team or a professional team. If you don’t go in with a good attitude, you might as well not play.”

Roy has worked hard to bring his Huskies up to the level they are at right now, but within a few months the Blaze have aquired some winning talents.

“George Espinoza is quite a player, he has a terrific winning attitude and Chico Morera who used to play with the Chicago Sting played on a club world championship team from Uraguay—the real world championship,” Roy said.

The Huskies will wrap up their home game schedule of the year and Roy is looking to end it with a tough, classic game. “Alek Mihailovic has a great reputation as a coach and I know quite a few guys on the the team. I know they’re going to come in with an excellent attitude.”

Roy likes the fact the Huskies are facing professional teams because it gives the pros the opportunity to see potential-pro players on the NIU roster. “When they come, they’ll get to see some potential pro-caliber players at Northern. I think Willy Jr. and Tony Adolphs have the potential, and it’s a good opportunity for our guys to showcase their talents,” Roy said.
