SA approves organizations’ budgets
April 8, 1990
Student Association senators approved nine of 11 campus organizational budgets Sunday.
Chess Club and ARS Nova did not have members at the senate meeting, which is required for budget approval. The organizations’ recommended budgets will come up for approval at a later date, said SA Treasurer Bruce Williams.
The finance committee tried to allow each recommended budget a 4.5 percent increase over the last year’s budget, Williams said.
The Black Student Union requested $6,313 more than the senate approved. BSU Vice President Otis Moore said it was “far above” what the organization has ever requested because “more plans than ever” are in the works for next year.
The BSU asked for $938 to pay a Lifeline newspaper editor, but the senate denied it because of money constraints.
Moore said BSU will publish more than 10 editions of the newspaper next year, even though they were only budgeted for seven.
Moore said he is happy with the budget because it increased 4 percent.
To adjust to budget constraints, some organizations were refused money for conferences.
Black Graduate Student Association members “jointly opted” to pay for one conference with money from their “own pockets,” said Treasurer Pamela Bozeman.
The nine approved budgets include:
-African Students Union—requested: $3,784, approved: $1,137
-Alpha: Friends of Antiquity—requested: $1,103, approved: $1,133
-NIU Black Choir—requested: $4,941, approved: $4,931
-Black Greek Council—requested $1,381, approved: $1,227
-Black Graduate Student Association—requested $4,011, approved: $1,676
-Black Student Union—requested: $14,470, approved $8,156
-Black Theatre Workshop—requested $6,750, approved: $5,929
-BROTHERS—requested $847, approved: $826
-Campus Child Care—requested $22,883, approved: $22,840
