Double insult
April 25, 1990
Upon reading the article concerning admission requirements on the April 18 issue of The Northern Star, we were quite surprised to learn that Daniel Oborn has created his own form of racial discrimination. To enter NIU, whites must receive an ACT score of 24 or above or be in the upper third of their class while minorities can receive a 17 and be in the upper half. By differentiating these requirements, Oborn has insulted both parties.
We understand that Oborn’s reasoning might be based on the possibility of inequal opportunity among races; however, does this measure promote equal opportunity in education or simply add to the problem of discrimination?
It appears the NIU administration finds difficulty in dealing with discrimination on campus, and we wonder how this decision will affect future NIU policy.
