Give evidence
April 19, 1990
By now, Marilyn Montiero’s indictment of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences (Star, March 2) must have been dismissed by the court of public opinion for lack of evidence.
She has utterly failed to produce any support for her charge that the college is doing less than it should to hire black faculty members. Instead, she has publicly made a roughly similar charge (“Montiero said the number of minorities being interviewed for faculty positions is unsatisfactory.”—Star, April 4) again without offering any evidence.
This compels me to bring an indictment of my own: I charge Montiero with irresponsible behavior. It was bad enough to make a serious accusation that she could not support; to continue such conduct, instead of withdrawing the original charge and apologizing to the College of LA&S, is outrageous. This is certainly not how the holder of an important administrative position ought to behave.
The support for MY charge is in the public record; the thing speaks for itself. May the court render the appropriate verdict!
