Board looks to remodeling projects
April 16, 1990
The campus will look a lot different in August after the Board of Regents looks at campus remodeling and construction projects.
The Regents will meet Wednesday and Thursday at Sangamon State University in Springfield.
The board governs NIU, Sangamon State University and Illinois State University at Normal.
Renovating the corridor between Williston and Adams will “improve the flow of pedestrian traffic and safety,” according to the agenda.
The board will be asked to approve a renovation budget, then NIU will advertise and receive bids for the project.
The old Arndt property owned by NIU at Lincoln Highway and Normal Road will be under renovation to accomodate the University Resources for Women. NIU will ask for the board’s approval of a $192,800 budget for the project.
The program will rent the building after interior and exterior remodeling is complete.
In January, the board approved the replacement of an elevator in Adams Hall to aid the handicapped. NIU will request the board allow a contract with the lowest bidder, and then vote to establish a recommended budget of $124,000.
Bid results for the extension of the NIU campus emergency monitoring and control system to Lincoln Hall, Douglas Hall, and the Campus Recreation Center will be reported at the meeting.
Other projects under consideration include:
Remodeling of the Dance Hall in Gabel Hall, which is expected to end by mid-April.
Replacement of the roofs of Grant Towers’ C and D wings after this semester.
Planning construction of a 20-bed dormitory at the NIU Lorado Taft Field Campus.
Completion of demolition work and construction on the NIU Broadcast Center.
Resurfacing NIU parking lots #3, 6, 18 and 20.
Remodeling Altgeld Auditorium for use as an art gallery is expected to be completed this summer.
Turf replacement at Huskie Stadium is expected to end May 7.
In addition to projects being worked on, some have been finished.
Stevenson North residence hall now has smoke detectors installed. Detectors in Stevenson South should be installed by the end of May.
The bathrooms of Neptune East and West residence halls have been renovated.
Passenger elevators in Stevenson and Grant Towers have been repaired.
At the board’s meeting in March, student fee increases were approved. Students can expect to pay as much as $144 more next year.
