SPEAC to organize DOA IV

Day of Action IV is underway.

The day, known for rallies against tuition increases, is scheduled for April 25 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Commons.

The Student Political Education Action Committee is organizing DOA IV and will set up tables for petitions and letter writing campaigns. Speeches given by students are also included.

The main focus of DOA IV will be a tuition freeze because it “affects every single student on campus,” Student Association President Huda Scheidelman said.

The Illinois Senate Bill 1507, which calls for a tuition freeze during the 1990-91 academic school year, will leave the Senate Rule Committee a week after DOA. It will then go to the Higher Education Committee for approval, she said.

“Tuition freeze is an emergency item and something has to be done now,” Scheidelman said. The question of who should pay for higher education remains unsettled. Low levels of state funding have resulted in higher tuition bills for students, she said.

In addition to a tuition freeze, students will be educated on better financial aid funding and tax increases for education.

Scheidelman said every student on campus is faced with these issues. Any tuition increase is unacceptable because it would not improve the quality of education, she said.

DOA is an appropriate time to take action on these issues, Scheidelman said. “It takes very little time to contribute to help himself or herself,” she said.

Although DOA demonstrations resulted in excitement and arrests in past years, the SPEAC did not plan for any disturbances this year. “We want to create awareness and maintain respect and credibility,” Scheidelman said.

“What we hope to accomplish is bring the message to legislatures of Illinois that we (students) are not going to settle for less than a tuition freeze,” Scheidelman said.

“We want specific actions on the bill and demand a response,” she said.
