Oh yeah, that Holocaust

The last several months have brought many surprises concerning the state of worldwide peace and international relations. It appears communism is becoming passe and democracy is the wave of the future.

In the spirit of this recent movement, East German voters freely elected the country’s first democratic government last week. Oddly enough, a human rights lawyer, Lothar de Maiziere, was elected prime minister.

And the new government’s first declaration was a definite newsmaker. It renounced a major myth of the old Communist government—that the Holocaust never happened.

Yes, for more than 40 years East Germans have been taught to believe there was no Holocaust during World War II, that six million Jews were not killed courtesy of concentration camps and various other horrors.

Now, the new East German government begs forgiveness from “all the Jews of the world” and vowing some sort of monetary retribution to the nation of Israel.

This brings up something interesting. White supremecist groups often say the Holocaust is a myth spread by Jews to help them gain sympathy, and use this as one of their big selling points when explaining their beliefs.

But, lo and behold, someone has claimed responsibility for this “myth.” It seems like it might be time for these groups to rethink their own myths, or dream up a new selling point.
