Education fair at HSC today

NIU education majors entering the job market this fall can attend the fifth NIU Mid-America Teacher Placement Days today.
The fair will feature brief interviews between school administrators and education majors in the Holmes Student Center’s Duke Ellington Ballroom from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“This is a big production and everyone at the center will have to help out,” said Ellen Anderson, a Career Planning and Placement Center counselor.
School administrators from 120 school districts, 60 in Illinois and 60 out of state, will be at the event sponsored by the placement center.
“This is the largest number of people we have had in five years,” said George Kubat, placement center assistant director.
Placement center counselor Dawn Scheffner said there are about 700 participants this year and she expects more than that number of NIU students and school districts to take part in the fair.
Employers are looking to fill teaching positions, especially in special education, physical sciences and minority teaching areas, Kubat said.
The event is open to all NIU students and alumni majoring in education. Candidates are asked to bring resumes for potential employers.
Registration is from 9 a.m. to noon in the ballroom.
During Teacher Interview Days, school district representatives travel to Western Illinois University in Macomb, Eastern Illinois University at Charleston, University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, Illinois State University at Normal and West Leyden High School in Northlake, Ill.
