‘Tango and Cash’ hopelessly inept
February 8, 1990
“Tango and Cash” is a hopelessly inept action film that is filled with mind numbing violence. The film is not quite bad enough to laugh at, but it’s not good enough to be worthwhile.
“Tango and Cash” a is police buddy film in the tradition of “Lethal Weapon.” In “Lethal Weapon”, the psychotic Mel Gibson character was contrasted by the more conservative Danny Glover character. However, in “Tango and Cash” both of the cops are borderline psychotics and neither one acts as the voice of reason.
The film spotlights the limited talents of Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell. Stallone gave an impressive breakthrough performance in “Rocky”, but his career has gone completely downhill since then. Kurt Russell is best known for his performances in silly Disney films and he often plays supporting characters in lame Goldie Hawn comedies. “Tango and Cash” reaffirms his position as the most consistently mediocre actor in Hollywood.
The film paints a disturbing portrait of modern day law enforcement. It implies that the only effective cops are the ones that violate civil rights and brutalize witnesses.
There are a few factors that prevent “Tango and Cash” from being a complete disaster. The frequent puns are somewhat obvious, but they are occasionally amusing.
The constant violence manages to take the spotlight off the bad dialogue. Fans of mindless destruction may appreciate the film’s action sequences, but more sensitive viewers may prefer to watch a highway traffic accident.
