Policy should be rethought

After the admission confusion some students faced when more than 1,000 were unable to get into a women’s basketball home game against DePaul without buying a ticket, something needs to be done to better the policy.

Some students were upset because they had to pay the $3 ticket price to get into the Chick Evans Field House once the sections reserved for students were filled, but some seats for ticket-payers were still vacant. When a game of this magnitude comes along someone will have to be turned away because the stadium can only hold so many people.

But perhaps the problem could be solved by making students and non-students endure the same guidelines. Instead of dividing seating sections between students and non-students, admission should be on a first come, first serve basis.

On this basis, the first people to arrive at the game would be able to get in whether they were paying for a ticket or not. There would not be specification as to who can sit where, but everyone who arrived early or on time could get in.

Since the average game held in the field house does not attract as much attention as the women’s game did, any potential revenue loss from ticket sales would not be significant. And besides, student athletic fees are collected to supplement low ticket sales so students should at least have a chance to get into the game for free when seats are open.
