Gymnasts ready for weekend

Things are looking up for both the men’s and women’s gymnastic squads as they head into the home-stretch of their seasons.

Fresh from a triangular victory, the men’s team faces a major test Saturday when the Huskies challenge a solid Penn State University unit. For the first time this season, the Huskies competed with a full contingent and the results were positive: NIU 270.40, Iowa State University 261.60, Western Michigan 252.50. All of which made for a winning debut for interim coach Carlos Silvestre.

The Huskies were led by Waldemar Kolasa, who took first on the vault (9.40) and horizontal bar (9.30).

The women’s squad continues to boost its scores after compiling a 3-3 dual-meet record after last weekend’s split. NIU was edged by Iowa State University 180.75 -180.10, but beat the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (171.65).

Frosh Vicki Thimgan led the way for NIU. Her 9.55 performance on the balance beam was good for a school record.
