VP hunt going nowhere
February 13, 1990
All five candidates were interviewed for NIU’s vice president for student affairs position, but not much has changed.
The biggest problem still remains that none of the candidates meet NIU standards, or at least what NIU standards should be.
Most of the five finalists are not from first-rate universities, and none have an adequate amount of experience under their belt. And the one who appears to be the most qualified doesn’t want to move closer to DeKalb.
If our own Barbara Henley, who is the acting vice president, is serious about the position, she should get rid of her wishy-washy attitude about moving to the DeKalb area.
Henley claims that commuting to DeKalb from Chicago has not affected her performance in the past. This might have been true when she was assistant to the vice president, but it does not necessarily hold true for the vice presidential spot.
The vice president for student affairs must live in the area to have a feel for the entire town and keep up on student concerns that occur after business hours. A person who leaves regularly at 5 p.m. and only stays late for evening meetings cannot keep up on DeKalb/student concerns as well as someone who lives in the area.
Although it would be nice to select the vice president soon, it will not help NIU students to fill the position with what there is to choose from. Either Henley should agree to move to DeKalb, or NIU should wipe the slate clean and start over.
