High priority?

This letter is concerning the article, “Snow removal high priority for NIU,” in The Northern Star on Feb. 19.

In the story, Tom Anderson, Physical Plant grounds foreman says that at NIU, the handicapped parking lots are top priority. This sounded kind of funny to me because I am one of the disabled students who use the handicapped parking spaces.

Feb. 15 at 2 p.m., the handicapped parking spaces were buried under the snow at DuSable Hall. There was no handicapped parking at DuSable Hall.

Feb. 19 at 8 a.m., more than 72 hours after the storm came and left, the door opener at DuSable Hall was still blocked. According to the NIU Disablilty Services, NIU spent about $3,000 for each door opener and it could not be used.

At 10 a.m. the same morning, the handicap ramp into Faraday Hall had not yet been shoveled and sidewalks from Parking Lot 10 were snow and ice covered.

I would hate to see what the disabled students would have to go through if the handicapped parking lots were not top priority!
