Election curse continues

The Student Association elections are finally over after suffering through voting irregularities and a blast from Mother Nature.

Some voters received the wrong ballots while other voters were not asked for their student I.D., nor were their I.D.s marked to indicate that they voted.

It’s unfortunate that the SA must hold an election each semester, only for the election to be a major flop because of voter apathy.

Nevertheless, it is the SA’s job to create a system that is not only beyond reproach, but is as efficient as possible.

Sadly, the SA failed to do so during this election.

SA Vice President Steve Coloia could not be anymore right when he said the pollworkers are only human. And if we are to believe SA Elections Commissioner Ray Callahan that the problems are not the pollworkers’ fault, the buck is passed to the SA.

Having a map of the five-district system is not enough to help the voters in the election. The map only creates another obstacle that blocks the already dismall voter turnout, and more importantly, the system is susceptible to inaccuracies or fraud.

When students sign up for classes, they are required to list a campus address. Why not obtain this list to verify the voter’s identification and their campus residence?

The voting procedures have long been a thorn in the SA’s side, but it doesn’t have to be if some time is given to finding a better way to run the elections.

The SA must find a better way before April’s executive elections.
