Go to first show

I’m writing this letter in response to the two letters of complaint from David Lasker (Feb. 12) and Gerald Berkowitz (Feb. 15).
The Campus Activities Board (CAB) is aware of the noise problem at some of the weekend movies. It is the Sunday 10 p.m. show that is normally the loudest, rowdiest, etc. In response to this, the CAB Films Committee has representatives at each Sunday 10 p.m. show with flashlights and instructions to confront anyone who is being excessively loud.
The problem with this is that it is very difficult to pinpoint the noise to one or two individuals. If these people can be singled out, they are removed from the theatre with no refund.
At every show there are also two “redcoats” who patrol the theatre to control the noise. The earlier shows (7 p.m.) are usually less “zoo-like.” It would be my recommendation for those who want to enjoy a movie without the background noise to attend these earlier shows.
I realize this is not a solution, but until we can discover the source of the problem, it’s a good alternative.
The reason the 4 p.m. shows were deleted from our program was due to poor attendance. We did not feel it was worth the time and money to continue to have these earlier shows. If a substantial amount of people feel as strongly as Mr. Berkowitz, perhaps the 4 p.m. shows could be reinstated.
In the meantime, I would just like it to be known that CAB is doing its best to alleviate the noise problem. Perhaps if the people who are disturbing the other weekend patrons are reading this, they will realize the problem they are causing and will resolve it.
