Plan for snow
February 6, 1990
I was very disappointed, walking across campus Monday morning, at the inability of the university to clear the ice off of heavily traveled pathways, or at least putting gravel or salt down to help break the slick surfaces.
I especially would like to comment on the stairs on the north side of the library, the ones leading down to the court outside. In a matter of two minutes I saw three people fall on those stairs.
No one got seriously hurt, but if one of them fell and hit his head, could you imagine the injuries, and possible law suits for the injuries?
You would think the university would have cleared those stairs, since they are right in the middle of campus–and are heavily traveled.
I also congratulate the blind students, who had a really hard time getting around snow banks and ice sheets.
If the problem is too few people working on clearing snow, how many thousands of able-bodied students are there?
Why doesn’t NIU employ a couple and give them a shovel or ice pick for a couple of hours?
You would think being located in northern Illinois, the university would be better prepared for such snow removal. But then again…
