Court to hear discovery motion

By Greg Rivara

Attorneys will make sure they have the same information about Lisa M. Garretson’s death in 1988 at a discovery motion today.

William Brady, counsel for Brent M. Hooghkirk, 18, and counsel from the State’s Attorney’s Office will share information about the case at the DeKalb County Courthouse in Sycamore. The motion is scheduled to be heard at 11:30 a.m.

Hooghkirk is charged with three counts of first degree murder, one count of aggravated criminal sexual assault, aggravated arson and concealing a homicide. He is being held without bond at the DeKalb County Jail.

Hooghkirk was arrested by the DeKalb Police Department Jan. 22 after a 17-month investigation. Hooghkirk allegedly raped and strangled Garretson, and then set her body and her 1010 State St. apartment on fire to hide the crime Sept. 21, 1988.

If guilty, Hooghkirk could spend the rest of his natural life in prison. He will not face the death penalty because he was 17 at the time of the incident.

Hooghkirik, a 1989 graduate of DeKalb Senior High School, lived within six blocks of Garretson’s apartment.
